Let's Rank the 10 Finest Screen Performances of 2011

If you’re both a movie fan and a consummate statistician, it’s easy to love and appreciate the Oscars for shoehorning the majority of film history into a manageable grading rubric. I’m an Oscar apologist myself, and I still have one bone to pick with the Academy — and all award-spewing organizations: the unnecessary reliance on gender-based categories. Is it not more thrilling to pit all actors against each other? Is there such an objective difference between Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock? Meryl Streep and Robert Downey Jr.? “Actor” is a gender-neutral term, and I think we’d all better off — and better entertained — without the meaningless siphoning. Thus, I’m stacking up the best performances of 2011 without categorical regard for gender or role size. It’s a winner-take-all affair, and this winner definitely wants it all. Here’s my top 10: 10. Albert Brooks, Drive Albert Brooks is Drive’s Oscar-friendliest component, and that’s for one reason: eerie, sustained dastardliness. As the Driver’s shady foe, Brooks’s lovable, aw-shucksy expression hardens into a papier-mache fright. Perhaps he benefits generously from his decision to counteract the lovable schmos he offered in Lost in America and Broadcast News, but his rancor is too real and evil to dismiss. While Ryan Gosling’s stoicism helps substantiate Drive’s reputation as an evocative mood piece, Brooks’s performance steers — or careens — the movie into horrifying reality. 9. Keira Knightley, A Dangerous Method Knightley’s performance in the part-fascinating, part-boring A Dangerous Method embodies the acting trope “big choices,” but it’s still a triumph: As Carl Jung’s histrionic patient Sabina Spielrein, she’s a quivering, questioning, repressed and entirely believable intellectual. Even when she’s jutting her jaw in spastic episodes like an unhinged Ruth Buzzi, her humanity is apparent and her insight is breathtaking. For playing such an uncomfortable character, I missed her whenever she wasn’t onscreen. 8. Jeremy Irons, Margin Call Irons’s very presence summons actorly gusto, so it’s easy to write off his commanding performance (or any of his performances) as a mere extension of his Shakespearean bravado. But Irons is no ham as CEO John Tuld in the bracing ensemble drama Margin Call; he’s the perfect picture of bureaucratic spinelessness. If you’re wondering what happened to the ungodly chill he once emanated as Claus von Bulow, look for it in his delivery of Margin Call’s spookiest insight into Wall Street politics: “If you’re first out the door, that’s not called panicking.” 7. Ralph Fiennes, Coriolanus Stephanie Zacharek is on to something when she denounces the relatively ho-hum proceedings of Coriolanus’s original text, but let’s remember to commemorate Ralph Fiennes’s directorial debut for its greatest asset: crackling performances. As the titular veteran who wears his moral conflict like an Egyptian death mask, Fiennes’s rage transcends mugging, warps into agony, and projects thunderous depth. Thunderous, I say! He’s so thoroughly and bleakly numbed to the strife and fanfare he abandons in wartorn “Rome” that his grisly comeuppance in the movie’s final moments feels like something of a relief. You see, Fiennes’s performance is an internal bloodbath long before we’re confronted with a viciously Technicolor one — and if there’s any justice, he’ll be rewarded with the Best Actor nomination that he was snubbed for after Quiz Show. 6. Shailene Woodley, The Descendants The most revered teenage performances seem to share the same dichotomies: childlike overreaction and burgeoning maturity, self-assurance and bubbling insecurity, sensibility and selfishness. Woodley is no iconoclast in these departments, but she gives Alexander Payne’s drippy, but poignant The Descendants its handfuls of urgency and momentum. While I’d hate to whittle her fabulous — and subtle — work down to one scene, the most memorable sequence I’ve seen all year is Woodley’s underwater breakdown in her family’s pool. It’s a heartbreaking and startling shot, but moreover, it’s an expression of unadulterated fear that confronts the viewer and challenges him to disbelieve her.

Michael Fassbender: 'Shame' Made Me Go a 'Little Bit Loopy' (VIDEO)

Michael Fassbender is about one inch away from becoming a household name. The German-born Irish actor has enjoyed a breakthrough 2011, with roles in everything from 'Jane Eyre' to 'X-Men: First Class,' where he starred as Erik Lehnsherr -- better known as Magneto. His role in the critically acclaimed new drama 'Shame,' however, might be his biggest challenge yet. Fresh on the heels of his performance as Carl Jung in the David Cronenberg-directed 'A Dangerous Method,' Fassbender stars in the NC-17 drama as Brandon, a Manhattan-based sex addict struggling under the weight of his desires. Quiet and methodical, Fassbender nails the role (pardon the pun) and will likely be among the five Best Actor nominees this year. Moviefone caught up with him earlier this year at the Toronto International Film Festival to -- what else -- talk about 'Shame,' sex and full-frontal nudity. Your Home Sink

Ryan Sampson in "Your Home Sink" A Rose rose bush Theater presentation from the play by 50 percent operates by Tom Wells. Directed by Tamara Harvey. Sets and costumes, Ben Gems lighting, Oliver Fenwick appear, Matt McKenzie. Opened up up November 23, 2011 examined November 25. Running time: 2 Several hours, 10 MIN.With: Leah Brotherhead, Lisa Palfrey, Steffan Rhodri, Andy Hurry, Ryan Sampson.Within the 19 fifties and sixties, 'kitchen sink drama' meant realist plays about British working class figures locked in impoverished social conditions railing against their lot. Tom Wells' invocation in the term inside the title of his new play invites us to consider how close or far his story and our occasions originate from when the phrase was produced. Furthermore, it, in the clever-to-the-point-of-cloying stroke that covers a bad tone in the play as well as the production, describes a genuine domestic appliance whose perennially degeneration stands in metaphorically for your internal existence in the Yorkshire family that's who owns it. That is, basically, a far more satisfying, gentler provincial British story: drain drama for age therapy. Gay, sensitive little brother Billy (the astonishing Ryan Sampson) satisfies his imagine participating in London art school, but runs aground when his teachers and sophistication mates realize that his portraits of Dolly Parton are sincere, unsure kitsch. His sister Sophie (Leah Brotherhead), an ambitious jujitsu professional, continues to be courted by Pete (Andy Hurry), a sweet-tempered plumber who can't finish a sentence, drives a pink van, and whose only living relative can be a stylish-hop loving, pot-offering grandmother. Milkman father Martin (Steffan Rhodri) is at denial the superstores are rendering his self-possessed business obsolete, while matriarch Kath (Lisa Palfrey), who works just like a school lunchlady and crossing guard, is just trying to retain the family together. Wells can be a skilled youthful author: The play's structure is tight, and quotable lines abound. You will discover handful of moments when Wells makes overt mention of the a worldwide beyond the family sphere, but hanging outdoors the play's frame -- and delivering it considerable relevance -- might be the larger context of financial recession, globalization, and public service cuts, which can make the script's control over existence round the precarious boundary between lower-middle-class getting-by as well as the economic abyss feel timely. This adds gravitas with a imaginary world that teeters consistently round the side of twee. The heavens bring lots of emotional truth for his or her roles (with Sampson a standout since the febrile, vulnerable Billy), there is however an anger under the top story that both script, and Tamara Harvey's production, disassociate with touching. Every character is revealed being frustrated and unrealized, however microcosm feels safe and padded, and there's nothing at risk the Dolly Parton tunes together with a cuppa tea can't make wiser. A late thought explaining why Sophie is relationship-shy arrives of nowhere we haven't received a reasonable reason to stress that something's really wrong along with her. Even Kath's large Christmas Day meltdown, when she attacks the sink getting a hammer and harangues your family about its capacity change, feels more awesome than desperate. Thus play and production may, ultimately, feed into old-fashioned stereotypes concerning the simplicity small-town folk. One looks toward future plays through which this promising author emerges within the new-writing hothouse, and allows products to obtain a little messier. Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway showcases the film stars chops like a song-and-dance guy. A Robert Fox and Shubert Organization presentation of the concert in 2 functions. Directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle. Music direction, Patrick Vaccariello. With: Hugh Jackman, Robin Campbell, Kearran Giovanni, Anne Otto, Lara Seibert, Hilary Michael Thompson, Emily Tyra, Olive Dark night, Clifton Bieundurry, Paul Boon, Nathan MundrabySuperlatives are unnecessary regarding "Hugh Jackman Back on Broadway," that the song-and-dance guy-switched-superstar has introduced towards the Broadhurst for 10 days. Jackman could at this time likely become unattainable any show on sheer pressure of celebrity, but because it works out, his vehicle can be his talents. The evening, apparently put together from the star's grab-bag of song faves, demands Jackman's all, and that he exceeds anticipation. The show continues to be developed between gaps in Jackman's shooting schedule for the following installment within the Wolverine franchise. "Hugh Jackman in Performance" preemed in the Curran in San Fran in May, after which the artist received greater grades compared to material, which appeared hastily put together. A refurbished "Hugh Jackman in Concert" was stated to become much enhanced in This summer in the Prince of Wales in Toronto. This Broadway edition appears to become further refined. The result is increased by the option of the Shubert's prime midsized house, the Broadhurst, that is some 500 seats more compact compared to Rialto's bigger venues. Box office signifies the star could fill individuals houses too, but here he's more close up and private. The proceedings happen to be devised to permit extensive interaction using the aud. Jackman invites a sing-along within the opening number, constitutes a couple of detours in to the house, brings a patron onstage, and it is happily chatty. Show continues to be slickly put together with a team headed by director-choreographer Warren Carlyle ("Follies"). Patrick Vaccariello leads the superb 18-piece orchestra through usually swinging charts (newer and more effective, some old). Landscape is minimal, composed mostly from the bandstand along with a movie screen that flies out and in. There's particularly great work from lighting designer Ken Billington. Six slinkily outfitted women offer window-dressing, which Jackman does not appear to require. Also available are four people of Nomad Two Mobile phone industry's, a Jackman-backed charitable organisation that supports Aboriginal culture. On "Within the Rainbow," the star is supported by two didgeridoos it makes sense magical. A salute to Hollywood musicals along with a Peter Allen section also rock the home. Box Office Preview: Brett Ratner's Star-Packed 'Tower Heist' Hopes to Steal $30 Mil Opening

Universal's broad PG-13 action-comedy Tower Heist is poised to top the domestic box office in its debut, but the big question is whether it can hit $30 million.our editor recommendsTower Heist: Film ReviewA Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas: Film ReviewEddie Murphy in 'Tower Heist': What the Critics Are Saying Eddie Murphy Says Brian Grazer Saved 'Tower Heist' (Video)Universal Backs Off 'Tower Heist' Premium VOD Test The $85 million pic has plenty of star power in a cast led by Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy and Matthew Broderick. Murphy, whose live-action career has suffered in recent years, in particular should see better numbers than usual. Casey Affleck, Alan Alda, Tea Leoni, Michael Pena and Gabourey Sidibe also star in the film, about a group of non-crooks who set out to rob the man who swindled them out of their pensions. PHOTOS: Where Are the 'Ben Stiller Show' Alumni Now? Imagine Entertianment's Brian Grazer and Kim Roth produced the film with Murphy, while Relativity Media helped finance. A year ago on the same weekend, Warner Bros.' comedy Due Date opened to $32.7 million at the domestic box office, and while Universal is using that film as a comp, the studio is lowering its weekend estimate to between $25 million and $30 million because of the soft marketplace. Rivals suggest Universal needs the movie to open to at least $30 million. COVER STORY: Why Is Funnyman Ben Stiller Not Laughing? Tower Heist also opens day and date in 21 countries overseas, including the U.K., Germany, Spain, Hong Kong and India. In the U.S., tracking -- which has popped in recent days, due to a flurry of publicity by Stiller and Murphy -- is strong among males of all ages followed by older women. Tower Heist also should play well with African-American and Hispanic audiences because of Murphy and Pena, according to Universal. However, Tower Heist could lose young men to Warner Bros. and New Line's more modestly budgeted A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas. Conservative estimates show the R-rated stoner comedy opening in the $18 million range, but it could hit $20 milion, thanks in part to the 3D factor. (Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay opened to $14.9 million in April 2008.) Played by John Cho and Kal Penn, Harold and Kumar go on the search for the perfect Christmas tree after Kumar destroys the original. The film, also starring Niel Patrick Harris, is packed with 3D gimmicks (think smoke rings). A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas cost in the low $30 million range to produce. DreamWorks Animation and Paramount's 3D toon Puss in Boots has a good shot of besting Harold & Kumar for the No. 2 spot domestically, and is predicted to gross in the low $20 million range in its second weekend. The pic opened to $34.1 million last weekend after losing business because of the freak storm on the East Coast. Public Enemy's Chuck D sues UMG

BY CHRISTOPHER MORRIS Rap act Public Enemy's frontman Chuck D has added his title to some chorus of Universal Group artists who've prosecuted the organization for underpayment of digital royalties. Inside a related matter, a federal judge has refused UMG's motion to dismiss the sooner actions filed by Take advantage of Zombie and Ron James' estate. Chuck D (real title Carlton Douglas Ridenhour) filed their own class action lawsuit against UMG in U.S. District Court in Northern California on Wednesday. The experience alleges "UMG's accounting practiceshave permitted UMG to unlawfully withhold a large amount of money it receives from digital content companies" for that purchase of digital downloads and master ring tones. Based on the action, UMG acquired privileges to Public Enemy's 1987-98 tracks if this acquired Def Jam, the rap act's label, in 1998. The suit claims "UMG is having to pay complaintant along with other class people roughly 25% from the royalties that it ought to be having to pay them for moneys received from music download companies." It alleges that on 1,000 digital singles downloaded at 99 cents each, artists are titled to $315.85, versus $80.33 owed based on UMG's information. For 1,000 ring tones offered at $3 each, the suit claims artists are owed $660, versus $49.89 owed based on UMG's methodology. Chuck D's action cites last year's appellate court decision in F.B.T. Productions' suit against UMG and Aftermath Records, which discovered that F.B.T., which created Eminem's earliest tracks, was titled to greater digital royalties according to rates for masters licensed to 3rd parties (Daily Variety, Sept. 7, 2010). That decision also inspired class actions filed in federal court in Northern California captured through the James estate (Daily Variety, April 5) and Zombie, his band Whitened Zombie, Whitesnake and Dork Mason (Daily Variety, May 24). On Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston refused UMG's motion to dismiss the situation with different reading through of Zombie's and James' contracts indicating the correct venue for law suit. Illston also refused UMG's motion to transfer the situation in the court's Northern District to the Central District. Chuck D's action now brings the amount of pending royalties cases against UMG to 3. James Pizzirusso, a lawyer at Hausfeld LLP in Washington, D.C., that is representing the rapper, told Daily Variety, "I can tell the instances will ultimately be consolidated." Ratings: Allen Gregory Debuts Weakly

Allen Gregory Allen Gregory looks like he just might be a snotnose whom people dislike. The latest entry in Fox's Animation Domination block debuted Sunday to modest 4.74 million viewers and a 2.4 rating among 18-to-49-year-olds at 8:30/7:30c, overnight Nielsen numbers showed. That indicates people changed channels in droves as The Simpsons' "Treehouse of Horror XXII," which preceded it, spooked 8.01 million, posting a 4.0 demo rating. Fall TV Popularity Contest: We have a winner! In the same hour, Once Upon a Time, starring Ginnifer Goodwin and Jennifer Morrison, looked like it could be a keeper, pulling in 11.64 million (compared with 12.79 million for its debut) and a 3.9 demo rating. With CBS' ratings skewed by a half-hour football overrun, Amazing Race lured 14.29 million viewers (3.5 demo rating), according to the early data. At 9/8c, CBS' The Good Wife attracted 10.12 million people (2.3 rating), whileDesperate Housewives grabbed 9.28 million (3.1), and Family Guy and The Cleveland Show grabbed 5.97 million viewers (3.2 demo rating) and 4.63 million (2.3), respectively. Sunday Night Football again featured a lopsided game. But the Eagles' 34-7 thrashing of the Cowboys wasn't nearly half as bad as the 62-7 final score a week ago (the biggest blowout in the franchise's history on NBC) and managed a night-leading 20.16 million fans and 8.2 demo rating. Check out the rest of the day's news In prime time's final hour Sunday, Pan Am leveled off, getting 5.90 million viewers and a 1.9 demo rating vs. last week's 5.77 million (1.8) - which culminated a downward path that began with 10.87 million, down to 7.75 million, to 6.42 million and to 5.89 million viewers. At the same time, CSI: Miami grabbed 10.14 million people and a 2.0 demo rating. And for the record, the seven-game World Series won by the St. Louis Cardinals wound up averaging 16.6 million viewers, a 16 percent increase over last year's 14.3 million. The final game caught 25.4 million fans, making it the most-watched Series game since 2004, when the Boston Red Sox clinched their first title in 86 years.

It appears like Hasbro Boss John Goldner wasn't kidding around. Only one next day of he told experts the toy company was "positively talking about" a 4th 'Transformers' film with director Michael Bay, producer Steven Spielberg and Vital, Variety reviews that plans for any 4th and fifth have been in the whole shebang. Should this happen, the program would be to shoot 'Transformers 4' and 'Transformers 5' back-to-to keep production costs lower and produce inside a new star to exchange the departing Shia LaBeouf. No deals happen to be offered yet, but Variety mentions Jason Statham being an option being "bandied about." (Note: this is awesomesauce.) Bay had alluded that he wouldn't direct another 'Transformers' film, but he's thinking about pointing this go-around, showing once more those funds talks. [Variety] Talking about Shia LaBeouf, the actor is mounted on play a 20-feet-tall giant in what's being referred to being an "untitled cool love story." The film follows a broke girl who moves home following a string of bad associations, and strikes up a rapport using the giant nearby. Gil Kenan ('Monster House') authored the script and can direct. Being 20-ft-tall might have prove useful for LaBeouf in Vancouver a week ago. Ahem. [Variety] Time for many Hollywood gossip: TheWrap reviews that Mark Wahlberg and David O. Russell are no more buddies following the director cast Bradley Cooper in the new film. Wahlberg have been mounted on star in Russell's 'The Silver Textures Playbook' but was changed by Cooper due to costs. A minimum of that is what the director's estranged cousin informs TheWrap. Wahlberg has starred in three films for Russell, including 'The Fighter' which marked the director's comeback after investing years in Hollywood jail for his caustic on-set antics. Originate from this story that which you must. [TheWrap] "Used to do it by myself terms, during my own time, during my own words, which is completely the kind of relationship I wish to need to that information. Used to do it because I recognized the way in which it assisted people, Used to do it since it was time to get it done, and yeah, it had been certainly a deliberate choice to get it done for the reason that way," Zachary Quinto on why he made the decision to be released. Good job. [NextMovie] 'Zombieland' screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese happen to be hired to show the Hasbro toyline 'Micronauts' right into a new film for director J.J. Abrams and Vital. You will find several things wrong for the reason that sentence, however, many right? [Deadline] Film writer William Monahan has ideas for any follow up to 'The Departed,' try not to hold your breath. ""I believe Warner Bros. might have loved to determine a synopsis from it,Inch the Oscar champion told Collider when requested why a follow up wouldn't materialize despite Monahan's notes. "I do not do synopses and that i don't pitch. Personally, I'm not sure whether it's ever going to take place. I understand the film, I have got the film during my mind. 'Fringe' Star Anna Torv On Existence Without Peter Bishop

For somebody who does not exist, Peter Bishop sure gets lots of attention. "Fringe," the breathtaking Fox series presently in the 4th year on tv, established fact to take bizarre risks and asking audiences in the future along for that ride but removing among the show's most significant figures Joshua Jackson's skeptic youthful genius Peter Bishop directly from existence? This is a gigantic gamble, for this show. When Anna Torv, who stars within the series as brilliant FBI agent Olivia Dunham, stopped by MTV News now to discuss the present season of "Fringe," we requested her the most crucial question of: what's existence as with a global without Peter Bishop? "Well, the Olivia which i play does not understand what existence was as with him, so I am normal," she stated, speaking that the show presently is available inside a world where both Peter from your world and also the one from sleep issues died within their childhood quite simply, he never resided lengthy enough to satisfy Olivia and link up with Fringe Division. Obviously, Peter were available our heroes just have no idea that at this time. Also it will not be lengthy before he comes roaring to existence, Torv taunted, so when he is doing, things are likely to get better, interesting, to place it gently. "I do not think I am giving anything away when I only say the event of the months are Peter Bishop," she stated. "We are likely to see much more of him and just how he unravels these figures." Starting this latest season, Torv stated that they was completely not aware from the "Fringe" writers' plans for how to approach Olivia, her fellow cast people and also the mythology they have already spent years creating considering Peter's departure. "They're going for their authors camping and pretty near to filming, they return, and it is like, 'Okay, are we able to talk now?'" she chuckled. "I suppose there's just kind of a lot there wasn't time to sit down lower and exercise which cases did not get solved and which of them did [within the new, Peter-less 'Fringe' timeline]." Without that type of concrete information, then, Torv centered on what she thought will be the transformed dynamics between Olivia along with other people from the Fringe team, namely Peter's father Walter, the ingenious but broken researcher performed perfectly by John Noble. "When Peter was there, he was greatly the nurturer [to Walter], he was greatly the companion, but without him, the greatest difference we have seen is within Walter, who did not have Peter to create him out and help him improve,Inch she stated. "But things i was looking forward to is there's a bit more warmth, a closeness between Walter and Olivia." It's not only Olivia and Walter's relationship that's transformed due to Peter's removal from existence, either. "You will find a few episodes approaching where we reintroduce a few figures and you will go, 'Oh, this is a different relationship towards the one we are accustomed to,AInch she taunted. "But I am not likely to say anymore about this!Inch Inform us that which you think about the brand new season of "Fringe" within the comments section as well as on Twitter!

Equity, League strike deal

Stage thesps' union Actors Equity Assn. and the Broadway League, the trade association of legit producers and presenters, have made a tentative pact for the production contract, the agreement that governs the employment of actors and stage managers in commercial Broadway productions and tours. Good for four years, the new deal would expire in September 2015. Few details were made public prior to the union's upcoming ratification vote on the pact, but among the provisions were annual wage increases as well as the formation of a new Labor-Management Committee. The new body would aim to reduce grievances and more nimbly address work-related situations regarding safety and other issues. Group, to be made up of an equal number of union reps and producers, would meet quarterly. Formation of the committee seems prompted in part by last season's urgent, high-profile labor and safety concerns arising on "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark." The new overall deal between Equity and the League will first be reviewed by Equity's governing body, the National Council. If the council gives the pact a green light, the deal then goes up for a ratification vote by union members who have worked under the production contract since 2004. No exact timeline for that process has yet been laid out, although a rep for Equity estimated the vote could take place in early December. Once approved, the contract would be retroactive to Sept. 25. The latest round of labor talks seems to have gone smoothly for both sides, with barely a peep heard in legit circles about the negotiations. Although often such contractual wrangling is largely collegial, talks do sometimes deteriorate, as evidenced by the stagehands' strike in 2007 and the musicians' strike in 2003, both of which shut down the Rialto for multiple performances. Cronenberg Updates On Eastern Promises 2

And The Fly 3!A Dangerous Method is about to premiere at the NY Film Festival; Cosmopolis is in the can; and there have been various rumours in recent months about what else David Cronenberg may have in development. "Sometimes on IMDb you see you're doing three movies you've never even heard of," he told Shock. Thankfully, he's happy to clarify. There were odd rumblings some time ago of Cronenberg remaking his own version of The Fly. Not strictly true, says the director, but not exactly false either. "Yeah, that was a thing," he says. "It's not exactly a remake; it's sort of a sequel, kinda. I've written a script of that but I don't know if it's going to really happen. That has to do with Fox..."He definitely isn't making Timecrimes, the English-language version of Nacho Vigalondo's sci-fi thriller: "They proposed it to me and I turned it down, and then suddenly it was on the 'net like I'm doing it! I think it was the director of the Spanish version that was responsible for saying I'm doing it, but I never was."But a sequel to 2007's Eastern Promises definitely is on the cards, albeit not quite as an immediate prospect. "It's possible," says Cronenberg carefully. "Steve Knight wrote it, and he's now writing a second draft, and Focus are interested, so we'll see..."More naked Viggo violence? Something to erase the memory of The Fly II? Or would you rather Cronenberg shocked with the new rather than revisiting the old? A Dangerous Method is out in the UK in February, followed by Cosmopolis some time later in the year.Of the Don Delillo adaptation (which stars Robert Pattinson) Cronenberg enthuses "It's very cinematic. Well, it is and it isn't. Most of the movie takes place inside a limo. Some people would say that's not cinematic, but I say it is!"

Toronto: Fox Searchlight To Acquire Shame

UPDATE: Fox Searchlight toppers Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula have confirmed the acquisition ofShame at Toronto. Searchlight’s official release is after the jump. EXCLUSIVE: In the first major deal of the Toronto Film Festival, Fox Searchlight has acquiredShame, the Steve McQueen-directed NC-17 drama that was the talk of Telluride. Bidding came down to Searchlight and The Weinstein Company. The film is said to showcase a tour de force performance by Michael Fassbender, who plays a New Yorker unable to manage his sex life when his wayward younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves into his apartment, and his world spirals out of control. Searchlight had been the frontrunner in the bidding. The film is a provocative purchase for a number of reasons: It is unabashedly NC-17, features graphic sex scenes and nudity — one source said “think dungeon sex” — and McQueen has final cut and will not change a frame. It will be a controversial release for Searchlight, whose parent company has already weathered plenty of scandal lately. Also, the deal calls for a late-year release and Best Actor campaign for Fassbender; Searchlight will already be waging a campaign in the same category for George Clooney in the Alexander Payne-directed The Descendants. Hanway brokered the Shame deal. Here’s Searchlight’s release: TORONTO, Ontario, Canada September 9, 2011 Fox Searchlight Pictures Presidents Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula announced today that the company has acquired U. S. rights to the intimate and provocative drama SHAME. The film is directed by Steve McQueen, written by McQueen and Abi Morgan and stars Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan. SHAME is a See-Saw Films production for Film4 and U.K. Film Council and produced by Iain Canning and Emile Sherman. Tessa Ross, Robert Walak, Peter Hampden and Tim Haslam are executive producers with Bergen Swanson as co-producer. HanWay Films is handling international sales. The film is scheduled to be released in 2011. Steve McQueens courageous exploration of modern lifes extremes is breathtaking. He has crafted an extraordinary film that probes some of the deepest and darkest issues ever portrayed on screen with amazingly gifted performances by Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan, said Gilula and Utley. Fox Searchlight contacted us immediately after the screening in Telluride to tell us how much they loved the film. Their approach to marketing and distributing the film this year was incredibly detailed and impressive. We are excited to be working with them on a film that is sparking debate and a strong emotional reaction from audiences, said Canning and Sherman. This is a brave statement and an important move by Fox Searchlight. I am very happy they came on board to release Shame in the U.S. It’s great to be working with a team that is so passionate about cinema, said McQueen. Brandon (Michael Fassbender) is a New Yorker who shuns intimacy with women but feeds his desires with a compulsive addiction to sex. When his wayward younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves into his apartment stirring memories of their shared painful past, Brandons insular life spirals out of control. The deal was brokered by Fox Searchlights Executive Vice President of Worldwide Acquisitions Tony Safford, Senior Vice President of Business Affairs Megan OBrien, Vice President of Acquisitions Ray Strache with Thorsten Schumacher and Claire Taylor of HanWay Films on behalf of the filmmakers. Fox Searchlight Pictures is a specialty film company that both finances and acquires motion pictures. It has its own marketing and distribution operations, and its films are distributed internationally by Twentieth Century Fox. Fox Searchlight Pictures is a unit of Fox Filmed Entertainment, a unit of Fox Entertainment Group.

Walking Dead's New Boss: I'm Not Frank Darabont and I Shouldn't Try to Be

Andrew Lincoln Fear not, Walking Dead fans: The man who replaced Frank Darabont as series boss wants to calm your fears. "There's been all this concern that I'm going to f--- up this show, and really, we're just trying to get it done," Glen Mazzara told a handful of reporters who screened the Season 2 premiere on Thursday. Glen Mazzara replaces Frank Darabont as Walking Dead showrunner Mazzara certainly has some big shoes to fill. Darabont, who adapted the AMC hit from the comic books created by Robert Kirkman, parted ways with the series just days after attending its Comic-Con panel in July. (Fortunately, he had already mapped out the entire season with around eight episodes already written.) "We all did a lot of work on plotting this season under Frank, and part of the reason we've had such a smooth transition is that it's a fully articulated world," said Mazzara, who had never read the comic books before starting Season 2. Previously, he wrote an episode in Season 1 as a freelancer. "This [season] is consistent with the material that we did last year. I think, like any second season, you work out the bugs. You try to improve. What you're seeing is the usual growth of any TV show, creatively. There's no plan to deviate from what we worked out, there's no different vision of the show." Though the producers declined to elaborate on the why Darabont is no longer running the show, they did reiterate that he'll remain an executive producer. (His name appears in the opening credits of the season premiere.) "Let me be honest, it was rough," Mazzara said of breaking the news to the cast. "There's an emotional connection to Frank that they're never going to have to another writer/producer." 10 cool things from The Walking Dead panel at Comic-Con "So, now I'm in this situation where I have to take over and try to fill Frank's shoes. Well, that's a dangerous situation," he continued, explaining to the cast that at some point, there's going to be scripts that differ from Darabont's voice. "I think the show would be inauthentic if I tried to mimic's Frank's voice. I'm not Frank Darabont and I shouldn't try to be. I think that would hurt the show. I asked them, please help keep me honest, keep the writers honest and be collaborative." The cast then insisted they be present when Mazzara broke the news to the crew, so they could be standing behind him in solidarity. "Frank blessed Glen as showrunner and made it clear to the cast and crew that he had his blessing," executive producer Gale Anne Hurd added. As for the second season, the show will take a long 11-week break after the first seven episodes have aired. Hurd said they knew about the split from the beginning, which gave them time to create a great cliffhanger to keep fans anticipating the February return. Kirkman likened it to having two seasons in one year. Compared to what some critics have called a slowly paced first season, the producers said they'll have more event episodes this time around. "Season 2 is just jam-packed," Kirkman said, later adding that Season 2 is very intense. "It's a much bigger season than the first season. There's a lot going on." The Walking Dead: Creator weighs in on Season 1's biggest mystery Part of upping the excitement will come from more fantastical and gruesome zombie kills - a few of which in the season premiere may actually make you scream out loud. "Breaking Bad keeps setting new precedents for us to try and top," Kirkman joked, noting that AMC didn't attempt to censor the gore. "The fight really, for me, is to find something that they're not going to let us do, so we have to continually top ourselves." Just because it's more extreme, that doesn't mean it will be constantly grim. "You need to break the tension," Mazzara said of infusing more comedic moments. "This is not a bleak world, it is an intense world, but you need to have humor and hope in it otherwise it's a very bleak, ugly world and that's not something we're interesting in doing." The 90-minute second season premiere of The Walking Dead premieres Sunday, Oct. 16 at 9/8c on AMC.

Adam Carolla in Hot Water With GLAAD for LGBT Comments Again

Adam Corolla GLAAD is once again speaking out against Adam Carolla for his harmful remarks against the LGBT community. In a recent podcast, Carolla went on a tirade about transgendered people, asking, "When did we start giving a sh-- about these people?" He went on to say that the LGBT community should "shut up" about speaking out for equality because they are "ruining his life." He also said members of the LGBT community should drop the acronym LGBT (which stands for "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender") and instead use "YUCK." Check out the rest of today's news "Given his history of anti-gay and racist comments, networks and advertisers should know what their money is supporting if they choose to hire Adam Carolla," said Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs at GLAAD. "The gross intolerance that he tries to pass off as comedy should not have a place on our airwaves." This isn't Carolla's first time going up against GLAAD. Two years ago, on the "Loveline" radio program, which Carolla co-hosted with Dr. Drew Pinsky, the shock jock told listeners that gay parents are "not as good as" straight parents. On Monday, Carolla offered a half-hearted apology. "I'm sorry my comments were hurtful," he told TMZ.com. "That being said, I'm a comedian, not a politician."

'Final Destination 5': A Closer Look At Death's Design

The new "Final Destination" hits theaters today and takes audiences on a fifth spin through the horror franchise that finds teens terrorized by Death. This time, the Grim Reaper stalks a group of suspension bridge collapse survivors who manage to escape the disaster with their lives but not for long. The film stars Nicholas D'Agosto, Miles Fisher (who created that hilarious video we shared last week), Emma Bell, Courtney B. Vance, Arlen Escarpeta, Ellen Wroe, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, David Koechner and everyone's favorite Candyman, Tony Todd. While the reviews start pouring in, get a leg up on the nifty behind-the-scenes footage that Dread Central has queued up for you -- because you're a morbid weirdo -- then hit the jump for more of this week's Horror Bites! Wesley Snipes Talks "Blade" From Jail Between dropping the soap and carving himself a nice shiv, "Blade" star Wesley Snipes currently serving time in prison spoke to IGN about the popular vampire franchise and his thoughts on a sequel. The actor candidly revealed that he thinks the film biz doesn't credit the vamp series with the respect it deserves for contributing to the reinvigoration of the summer blockbuster. But would the Daywalker be up for another movie? "Under the right circumstances, with the right team, yes, I'd do another one. But don't get me wrong; I'm not waiting around for the opportunity. I've got plenty to do, plus an unraveled character in the works who I think will give Blade a helluva run for his money." See you on the other side soon, Snipes. "World War Z" is No Longer "World War Z" Point one for the big bummer department is news that Paramount has abandoned the nibbles of Max Brooks' beloved novel, "World War Z," that zombie fans were expecting to see on the big screen. The studio has decided not to adapt the author's post-war narrative, which is basically what helped separate the story from every generic flesh-muncher tale out there. Instead, Brad Pitt's character United Nations employee Gerry Lane will fight " in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself," Bloody Disgusting reports. It's also been confirmed that "Lost" star Matthew Fox has officially joined the cast. The film opens December 21, 2012. Ving Rhames Kicks Undead Ass in "Zombie Apocalypse" We'll be seeing Ving Rhames' Deputy Fallon again when "Piranha 3DD" hits theaters this November, but there's another horror project on the actor's horizon that sounds equally entertaining. The "Dawn of the Dead" star will battle the hordes again in "Zombie Apocalypse," and this time he's brought a sledgehammer. The film tackles the familiar plot of survival after the zombie plague hits America. Where are all the survivors this time? Apparently on the island of Catalina, and Rhames fights his way cross-country to join them. Check out this photo gallery of Rhames' latest dance with the undead. "Resident Evil: Retribution" Reunites Fans With Milla Jovovich Need more Milla? Well, you got her because this October she'll start shooting the latest installment in the survival horror franchise, "Resident Evil: Retribution." Hubby Paul W.S. Anderson will be behind the camera (working from his own screenplay) for Jovovich to reprise her role as the action-horror heroine, Alice. She'll be joined by the previously announced Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine though Bloody-Disgusting reports she's being recast. Popular game character Leon S. Kennedy and S.T.A.R.S. member Barry Burton are also expected to also make an appearance. Check out the carnage on September 14, 2012. Meet "Silent Hill 2's" Red Pyramid in Creepy Teaser Video The fan and studio behind-the-scenes footage for Lionsgate's "Silent Hill 2: Revelation 3D" has been creepy as hell, and this latest video doesn't disappoint. Check out the "Red Pyramid Suit" created by FX designer Paul Jones. Pyramid Head is one the game's most iconic (and demonic) characters who will be making another appearance in the new film. "Revelation" follows Heather Mason, the main character in the third videogame, who heads to Silent Hill to investigate the disappearance of her father after a nightmare begins to haunt her before her 18th birthday. Carrie-Anne Moss, Malcolm McDowell, Adelaide Clemens, Kit Harington, Sean Bean, Radha Mitchell, and Deborah Kara Unger star in the 2012 film. Riddick 3 Starts Casting

A few character details revealedAfter a few months of teasing and negotiating, it seems that the follow-up to Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick is finally up and running, with casting for what's so-far known simply as Riddick officially underway. And with casting news comes character reveals. In the first round of auditions, director David Twohy and his casting director Anne McCarthy are on the lookout for sexy female mercenary Dahl, smug commander Krone, the undescribed henchman Santana (not Joey, as far as we're aware), and [POSSIBLE SPOILER] Boss Johns, who's the father of the Johns played by Cole Hauser previously, and who's apparently rather keen to learn what happened to his son on Hades. Moviehole have seen a script of undisclosed age and draft, and are saying that Riddick is much more aligned with Pitch Black than Chronicles, making little or no mention of Furya or the (ahem) Underverse, and quickly dispensing with the business that saw Riddick as leader of an army of (ahem) Necromongers at the end of the last film. There's apparently a small role for Vaako, which might mean Karl Urban will be back for a cameo. And if that lot made us reasonably optimistic, we're slightly concerned at the mention of a twelve-year-old Alpha Kid , who has magic powers and shiney eyes like Riddick's.... Vin Diesel is, of course, starring (after a bit of soul searching), and the start-date is currently supposed to be sometime in September. We're rather liking the concept art that Diesel revealed on his Facepage....
