'Inbetweeners' breaks U.K. records

LONDON -- U.K. teen laffer "The Inbetweeners" has loved the greatest weekend opening ever for any Brit comedy and native indie pic within the territory, taking 13.two million ($21.8 million) from 455 sites in Blighty and Ireland. The figures, including 2 days of previews ($4.3 million on Wednesday and $3.two million on Thursday), trumped the prior greatest Brit comedy opening, "Bridget Johnson: Fringe of Reason," which made $17.two million in the first weekend in 2004. The $5.8 million pic, that is written by Entertainment Film Marketers and it is created by Film4, is really a spinoff from Funnel 4's eponymous hit sitcom four socially troubled teenage boys as well as their adventures in senior high school. Within the feature pic version, the gang mind to The island for 2 days to party without any parents, no instructors with no money hoping of meeting youthful women. The whopping opening figure also far surpassed opening weekend figures of top Brit pic of 2011, "The King's Speech," which made $5.5 million in the first weekend as well as outperform opening weekend figures for Disney's "Pirates from the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" ($19.a million) and "Transformers: Dark from the Moon" ($17.7 million). Pic is composed through the program's original designers and authors Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, while Ben Palmer directs and Christopher Youthful produces. Pic toplines Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison. In Cannes, IM Global was selling the pic, that was quickly acquired by a few worldwide areas, including The country (Aurum), Canada (Walnut Pictures), France (French Connection) and Germany (Where You Started Entertainment), a task for this type of localized comedy. Pic does not possess a U.S. distrib. Contact Diana Lodderhose at diana.lodderhose@variety.com

Adam Carolla in Hot Water With GLAAD for LGBT Comments Again

Adam Corolla GLAAD is once again speaking out against Adam Carolla for his harmful remarks against the LGBT community. In a recent podcast, Carolla went on a tirade about transgendered people, asking, "When did we start giving a sh-- about these people?" He went on to say that the LGBT community should "shut up" about speaking out for equality because they are "ruining his life." He also said members of the LGBT community should drop the acronym LGBT (which stands for "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender") and instead use "YUCK." Check out the rest of today's news "Given his history of anti-gay and racist comments, networks and advertisers should know what their money is supporting if they choose to hire Adam Carolla," said Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs at GLAAD. "The gross intolerance that he tries to pass off as comedy should not have a place on our airwaves." This isn't Carolla's first time going up against GLAAD. Two years ago, on the "Loveline" radio program, which Carolla co-hosted with Dr. Drew Pinsky, the shock jock told listeners that gay parents are "not as good as" straight parents. On Monday, Carolla offered a half-hearted apology. "I'm sorry my comments were hurtful," he told TMZ.com. "That being said, I'm a comedian, not a politician."

'Final Destination 5': A Closer Look At Death's Design

The new "Final Destination" hits theaters today and takes audiences on a fifth spin through the horror franchise that finds teens terrorized by Death. This time, the Grim Reaper stalks a group of suspension bridge collapse survivors who manage to escape the disaster with their lives but not for long. The film stars Nicholas D'Agosto, Miles Fisher (who created that hilarious video we shared last week), Emma Bell, Courtney B. Vance, Arlen Escarpeta, Ellen Wroe, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, David Koechner and everyone's favorite Candyman, Tony Todd. While the reviews start pouring in, get a leg up on the nifty behind-the-scenes footage that Dread Central has queued up for you -- because you're a morbid weirdo -- then hit the jump for more of this week's Horror Bites! Wesley Snipes Talks "Blade" From Jail Between dropping the soap and carving himself a nice shiv, "Blade" star Wesley Snipes currently serving time in prison spoke to IGN about the popular vampire franchise and his thoughts on a sequel. The actor candidly revealed that he thinks the film biz doesn't credit the vamp series with the respect it deserves for contributing to the reinvigoration of the summer blockbuster. But would the Daywalker be up for another movie? "Under the right circumstances, with the right team, yes, I'd do another one. But don't get me wrong; I'm not waiting around for the opportunity. I've got plenty to do, plus an unraveled character in the works who I think will give Blade a helluva run for his money." See you on the other side soon, Snipes. "World War Z" is No Longer "World War Z" Point one for the big bummer department is news that Paramount has abandoned the nibbles of Max Brooks' beloved novel, "World War Z," that zombie fans were expecting to see on the big screen. The studio has decided not to adapt the author's post-war narrative, which is basically what helped separate the story from every generic flesh-muncher tale out there. Instead, Brad Pitt's character United Nations employee Gerry Lane will fight " in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself," Bloody Disgusting reports. It's also been confirmed that "Lost" star Matthew Fox has officially joined the cast. The film opens December 21, 2012. Ving Rhames Kicks Undead Ass in "Zombie Apocalypse" We'll be seeing Ving Rhames' Deputy Fallon again when "Piranha 3DD" hits theaters this November, but there's another horror project on the actor's horizon that sounds equally entertaining. The "Dawn of the Dead" star will battle the hordes again in "Zombie Apocalypse," and this time he's brought a sledgehammer. The film tackles the familiar plot of survival after the zombie plague hits America. Where are all the survivors this time? Apparently on the island of Catalina, and Rhames fights his way cross-country to join them. Check out this photo gallery of Rhames' latest dance with the undead. "Resident Evil: Retribution" Reunites Fans With Milla Jovovich Need more Milla? Well, you got her because this October she'll start shooting the latest installment in the survival horror franchise, "Resident Evil: Retribution." Hubby Paul W.S. Anderson will be behind the camera (working from his own screenplay) for Jovovich to reprise her role as the action-horror heroine, Alice. She'll be joined by the previously announced Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine though Bloody-Disgusting reports she's being recast. Popular game character Leon S. Kennedy and S.T.A.R.S. member Barry Burton are also expected to also make an appearance. Check out the carnage on September 14, 2012. Meet "Silent Hill 2's" Red Pyramid in Creepy Teaser Video The fan and studio behind-the-scenes footage for Lionsgate's "Silent Hill 2: Revelation 3D" has been creepy as hell, and this latest video doesn't disappoint. Check out the "Red Pyramid Suit" created by FX designer Paul Jones. Pyramid Head is one the game's most iconic (and demonic) characters who will be making another appearance in the new film. "Revelation" follows Heather Mason, the main character in the third videogame, who heads to Silent Hill to investigate the disappearance of her father after a nightmare begins to haunt her before her 18th birthday. Carrie-Anne Moss, Malcolm McDowell, Adelaide Clemens, Kit Harington, Sean Bean, Radha Mitchell, and Deborah Kara Unger star in the 2012 film. Riddick 3 Starts Casting

A few character details revealedAfter a few months of teasing and negotiating, it seems that the follow-up to Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick is finally up and running, with casting for what's so-far known simply as Riddick officially underway. And with casting news comes character reveals. In the first round of auditions, director David Twohy and his casting director Anne McCarthy are on the lookout for sexy female mercenary Dahl, smug commander Krone, the undescribed henchman Santana (not Joey, as far as we're aware), and [POSSIBLE SPOILER] Boss Johns, who's the father of the Johns played by Cole Hauser previously, and who's apparently rather keen to learn what happened to his son on Hades. Moviehole have seen a script of undisclosed age and draft, and are saying that Riddick is much more aligned with Pitch Black than Chronicles, making little or no mention of Furya or the (ahem) Underverse, and quickly dispensing with the business that saw Riddick as leader of an army of (ahem) Necromongers at the end of the last film. There's apparently a small role for Vaako, which might mean Karl Urban will be back for a cameo. And if that lot made us reasonably optimistic, we're slightly concerned at the mention of a twelve-year-old Alpha Kid , who has magic powers and shiney eyes like Riddick's.... Vin Diesel is, of course, starring (after a bit of soul searching), and the start-date is currently supposed to be sometime in September. We're rather liking the concept art that Diesel revealed on his Facepage....

Isabelle Zufferey Boulton...Got the Part

Isabelle Zufferey Boulton...Got the Part Role: A female telepath in "Unspoken Ties," a nonunion film By Alison Mierzejewski August 6, 2011 Isabelle Zufferey Boulton Isabelle Zufferey Boulton had always dreamed of being an action hero. Trained in boxing and multiple forms of martial arts, she loved action movies and idolized Demi Moore's portrayal of the title heroine in "G.I. Jane." But Boulton doubted that her demure image would convince casting directors. "So far I've kind of played it safe," she says, because of "all the reactions I got from casting directors: 'Oh, she's so soft, she's so gentle, angelic.' Because I don't have that tough exterior, I haven't been submitting as much for those kinds of roles."After graduating from the Stella Adler Studio of Acting's two-year conservatory program in June, the nonunion actor spent every morning on BackStage.com searching the latest casting calls. In February, she submitted herself for Hine's Park Productions' "Unspoken Ties," a short mystery film.Yet when she received a copy of the script to prepare for her audition, Boulton was surprised to discover that the unnamed lead role of a female telepath, described as "kindhearted and earthy" with an "athletic physique" in the casting notice, was also a mind-reading assassin. Boulton grew nervous, remembering she had never been an obvious fit for violent parts. "This is something the teachers were very persistent on, trying to be more violent, more brutal, meaner," recalls Boulton of her training, "because I was perceived as being very gentle."At the audition, Boulton discussed her martial-arts training and her experience with what she calls a "vocabulary of violence," as well as how the script's themes resonated with her personally. Despite her insecurities, she was cast, partly for her resemblance to the actor playing the telepath's brother. Writer Carlos J. Benitez says that because he and director Vincent Daly were running out of time, they "took a chance and relied primarily on the look of the actors, their experience, and their commitment to the project. Isabelle's headshots were key to isolating her as a possible candidate for the part."To understand her character's experience with family betrayal, abandonment, and desensitization to violence and brutality, Boulton researched topics such as post-traumatic stress disorder and even put herself through her own physical training routine. She also gained a new experience when she provided additional voiceover work for the film."Originally her character was intended to be more cold and one-dimensional," Benitez says. "But she brought new layers to the character, which enriched the plotline. We welcomed this new interpretation of the character and decided to adopt it. She was able to provide us with range and a true actor's resolve to give the director what he wanted out of the character."Boulton is now more confident in submitting herself for the action roles she has always wanted. "Being cast as the female lead in 'Unspoken Ties' made my dream come true," she says, "and I even got to handle a prop gun!" Has Back Stage helped you get cast in the past year? Post mortem on the bloody mess that was 'Carrie'

Doug Ellin has bigscreen plans for his HBO show "Entourage." Off Broadway's MCC Theater trotted out the creatives and cast of the troupe's upcoming production of "Carrie," the musical version of the Stephen King tale that notoriously flopped on Broadway in 1988, in a sneak preview Monday that also served to tubthump for season subscriptions and kick off some buzz for the new staging. The evening, punctuated by a handful of tunes performed by an ensemble led by Marin Mazzie and Molly Ranson, offered a couple of insights into the thinking of the creative team, who reminisced about coming up with the project more than 20 years ago."It never occurred to any of us that this was not a genius idea," said book writer Lawrence D. Cohen, who also penned the screenplay for the 1976 pic."I always believed that if you put an unhinged woman onstage and give her a few good notes to sing, you're home free," added lyricist Dean Pitchford. The biggest laugh, however, may have come during the Q&A seg, when an audience member revealed she was involved in the show's Broadway preem. "I was one of the original dressers," she said. "I got a lot of overtime washing blood out of costumes." - -- Gordon CoxHow STRAINED is the relationship between Universal and Relativity? Apparently it's enough so that during the premiere of U's "The Change-Up" at the Village theater in Westwood on Monday night, no one clapped when co-financier Relativity's starry blue logo took shape on the bigscreen. Despite hearty hurrahs for every other credit -- from U's big bright globe right down to each individual executive producer -- the only sound to break the silence when Ryan Kavanaugh's company had its moment was a single whoop from somewhere near the back of the cavernous theater. As the final season of "Entourage" rolls out on HBO, there's already buzz about a jump to the bigscreen. At the Television Critics Assn. summer tour, executive producer Doug Ellin told the assembled reporters that "we're going to do a movie. It's just a question of when, and how quick." Of course they need a plotline to make that work. "Hopefully, we'll sit down and come up with an idea and make it happen." "Entourage's" Jeremy Piven has already moved on, starring in the bigscreen kids' pic "Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D," but he insists he's not ready to leave superagent Ari Gold just yet."I don't want to be too greedy. I'm totally fulfilled with this experience and grateful and joyous and I'm embracing this transition," he said at the "Spy Kids" junket last the weekend. "But where (the series) ends, Ari is faced with this conundrum. It's totally satisfying. If we were to end there, it would be a really nice, beautiful ending. And if it was the beginning, I think it could also be a great beginning. I know that sounds very cryptic, but it's true. So, I feel like it's a great place to begin the movie!"What will be nice for Piven is to get back his rep as a reasonable man. "To be identified with someone who's the antithesis of your energy and where you come from, it's been a very interesting and surreal ride." - -- Jenny Peters Contact Variety Staff at news@variety.com
